Speaker Biographies
Michael Gallis
Michael Gallis is widely considered America's leading expert in large-scale regional development strategies. He has pioneered a specialty in building frameworks through which public, private and institutional leaders can work effectively to create globally competitive regions. Through these frameworks, Gallis has mobilized leaders across the country to understand and develop new ways of responding to the challenges and opportunities of states and regions in the 21st century.
Gallis has led in-depth development programs for a number of regions including Detroit, Cincinnati, Memphis, West Michigan and Charlotte, as well as for several states, including Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey. Through these programs, Gallis has developed innovative strategies for enhancing the long-term development of regional systems, resources and communities. His projects have resulted in strong regional consensus and new public, private and institutional coalitions for promoting and developing strategic regional development programs. link: www.mgallis.com
Kip Bergstrom
Kip Bergstrom is the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council, a 25-member board of business, government, labor, higher education and community representatives which brings a focus on quality of place and innovation to Rhode Island's economic development efforts. In addition to strategy development, Policy Council members serve as champions to mobilize the initiatives, which have included the resources to implement key initiatives, which have included the Slater Centers (commercialization of university research), the Providence Creative Economy Initiative, the restructuring and expansion of the state's workforce development and adult education systems, the strengthening of the state's research infrastructure, and the reform of the state's tax structure to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Kip has 30 years of experience in the private and public sectors, in both planning and management roles. Kip has a Master's in City and Regional Planning from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he was the first student to specialize in economic development. link: www.ripolicy.org
Russell Gwatney
Russell Gwatney is a Director and Past President of the Memphis Regional Chamber, founded in 1838 and formerly known as the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce. Gwatney is also the current Chairman of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, Memphis Branch. He is currently President of the Gwatney Companies; operators of automobile dealerships in Arkansas and Tennessee. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of Arkansas with a B.A. in Real Estate Finance, Appraisal. Gwatney serves as either the Chairman or Board member of nearly 20 companies, civic or charitable institutions and boards throughout Tennessee, and has been honored with several prestigious volunteer of the year awards in the state.
